Vic: Cracknell to be recognised at Logies
By Charisse Ede
MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - Actress Ruth Cracknell will be inducted into television's
Hall of Fame at Sunday's 43rd Logie Awards, for her contribution to the Australian entertainment
industry.
This year's event, celebrating Australia's most popular and commended entertainment
personalities, could prove to be a night of controversies and upsets.
Gold Logie favourite and winner for the past four years, Lisa McCune, will miss the
event because she is about seven months' pregnant.
She told TV Week: "You get to a point when it becomes physically difficult to attend
a function like the Logies, and that's where I'm at."
And actors John Clarke, Bryan Dawe and Gina Riley, the stars of the ABC comedy, The
Games, are expected to boycott the awards ceremony because of a bitter contractual dispute
with the network.
The line up of nominations for the top award could also prove controversial, with Home
and Away newcomer Ada Nicodemou up for selection, despite not being nominated for a Silver
Logie.
The most popular new male talent is dominated by young soap stars, including Home and
Away's Ben Steel, who only started appearing on the show at the end of last year.
Most popular actor nominees include Neighbours heart-throb, Daniel MacPherson, last
year's winner William McInnes, and Blue Heelers stars Martin Sacks and John Wood.
Among the women the nominees for the most popular actress are almost as expected -
Rebecca Gibney, Georgie Parker and Sigrid Thornton - but there is the shock inclusion
of Home and Away's young star, Rebecca Cartwright.
Thornton and Parker are also up for the most outstanding actress award, together with
Kerry Armstrong of SeaChange, and Libby Tanner from All Saints.
The most popular program will be battled out by the regulars - All Saints, Blue Heelers,
Home and Away, and SeaChange.
Respected actress Ruth Cracknell will be the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Cracknell is one of the most awarded and acclaimed talents in the Australian entertainment
industry, and has worked in television, film and theatre for more than 30 years.
She was the star of the ABC comedy, Mother and Son and appeared in series such as A
Country Practice, Seven Little Australians and The Dismissal.
The Logies will air on Channel Nine from 8.30pm (AEST), Sunday night.
