NSW: Fire destroys Newcastle primary school

SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - Students of a Newcastle primary school are being told to stay home
today after fire destroyed most of the school overnight.

A fire brigade spokesman said the fire at Heaton Public School in Jasmond broke out
shortly after 2.30am (AEDT) and destroyed nine of its 11 classrooms.

The blaze took almost two hours to extinguish.

He said the building was u-shaped and made from timber and iron.

"The fire is highly suspicious because we had two separate fires started at either
end of the building, which joined together through a roof void," he told AAP.

A fire investigation team was due to arrive from Sydney this morning, he said.
